This tumour type is located in the connective tissue of the bone.

Behaviour

Fractures caused by this tumour type are seen in 50% of cases.

Metastases occur more towards the heart, the pericardium, the skin and other bones than towards the lungs.

Prevalence

Bone fibrosarcoma is rare and forms less than 5% of primary tumours of the bone.

Symptoms

A lump on the bone can be observed as a consequence of the space the tumour is taking. If metastases occur towards other bones, then limping can take place.

Via radiographic photos of the bone, it is possible to trace anomalies. A tissue sample is necessary to confirm the diagnosis, but even with a tissue sample it isn’t always easy to make a distinction with an osteosarcoma (bone tumour).

Surgical excision is advised, the role of chemotherapy is unknown.

A 12-month survival was seen in 29% of cases after surgery where the limb was spared, with amputation this was 66%.
